Trash Bin Worthy Writing: What Do You Do When Your Delivery is Off and You're Not Feeling It?

Bad writing is inevitable.

There will be times when you sit down to write for your business (whether it be a sales page, an email, or a post of some sort) and youโ€™ll know right away itโ€™s trash-worthy.

Despite having a good idea of what you want to say and how you want to say it, when you look it all over you realizeโ€ฆ itโ€™s clunky and the delivery is off.

If youโ€™re not feeling it, why would your reader feel it?

Do you:

  • Sit down to rewrite it.

  • Put on your done-is-better-than-perfect hat and publish something thatโ€™s a C- because youโ€™re on a timeline?

  • Creep around on other peopleโ€™s writing/copy so you can try and figure out whatโ€™s not right with yours only to end up muddled โ€” both mentally and on the page?

  • Think, โ€œWhat would Jillian say about this?โ€

If youโ€™re the last bullet point, I'll have to call my husband and tell him we need to go celebrate because itโ€™s working. [pictures custom kitchen; smiles].

JK letโ€™s focus. Really โ€” how do you turn it around and nail it?

The first thing you need to assess is: what is the purpose of what Iโ€™m writing here?

If itโ€™s a sales page its purpose is to help your reader decide between working with you right now, or not. So, sales.

If itโ€™s a web page its purpose is to speak to your reader in a way that makes her say โ€œYup, Iโ€™m in the right placeโ€ and showcases your brand message/personality. So, connection and likely authority.

If itโ€™s an IG post, itโ€™s purpose is likely to keep you on the hamster wheel. Okay, kidding again โ€” itโ€™s purpose is likely to nurture and bring value to your readers.

What is this piece of writing's end goal? โœ๐Ÿฝ

Once that context is established, youโ€™ll want to ask yourself: is there a shortcut here? A template? A framework? A system I can implement?

In my business, when it comes to writing sales copy, I rely on both frameworks and inspiration.

โžก๏ธ What I'm saying is when the writing isn't right, you can always stop, toss it, and start again while working backward from your goal. โฌ…๏ธ

Make sense?
